Re: Bees seem sick

Thanks. That encourages me. I'll try sugar-dusting every week for a while, and see if they make it.

Re: Bees seem sick

I have a top-bar hive. I don't use foundation, and the bees draw out their own comb from the bottom of a V-shaped bar. I dusted them with sugar and put some sugar syrup in the hive to feed them, to make up for the honey that's been robbed. When the last of the brood have emerged in the fall, I will ...

Re: Bees seem sick

Well, I did a sugar roll and 1/4 cup of bees had 8 mites. Today I dusted with sugar. So I'm not a purist. If I can get this hive through the winter, I will try raising up a queen -- or get a TF queen -- and go from there.

Re: Bees seem sick

On another forum, several people thought it was probably mites, so I just got through doing a sugar roll. I got 1/4 cup of workers from 2 brood combs, and counted 8 mites. :( So, what do I do now? I suspect a couple of reasons my hive is having problems. Aside from the fact that I know very little a...

It is nearly dusk, and they should not be in the grass. They seem unable to fly. Some are staggering through the grass, others are sitting on twigs and bra...

Re: Advice on locating a hive

Side yard. Offer to mow near the hives? Not a bad idea. Thanks. I got my bees installed. Went back 3 hours later to make sure the cluster was around the queen, and they were. I'm going to leave them alone for a couple of days before I check to make sure the queen is out and doing her job. All went ...

Advice on locating a hive

I am brand-new to beekeeping, but have been watching and reading a lot of information on the subject online. I get my bees tomorrow. I have a top-bar hive and 7/10 acre on the outskirts of a small town in southeast Tennessee. The lot is level. Most of the backyard is occupied by a vegetable garden, ...
