Re: Using borrowed combs in Ben Harden method

I have taken combs of brood along with nurse bees and added them to a weaker hive to boost numbers. I spritzed the comb and nurse bees down with sugar water with a little vanilla extract in it to cover their hive scent. It worked well for me and I observed no fighting amongst the bees. I've never us...

Re: Timing queen rearing/splits

Allen,

I'm wondering the same thing, since we are in the same area. I haven't seen any drones yet and bees are just starting to build up from winter numbers.

I got my bees from Wolf creek and they have done well. This is there first winter but they are still alive. Hoping for the best in spring!

welcome aboard!

I too have Warre hives and a couple langstroths. Don't assume you'll get a significantly reduced crop with Warre hives. Many commercial apiaries in France run them exclusively.

Re: Queen rearing pages

Thanks for those two links, Michael. I am new to beekeeping but have watched single minded breeding ruin horses, cattle, goats, dogs and swine all my life. When breeders get a fixed idea of what trait is desirable they can often,"throw out the baby with the bathwater".

Re: Devil's Walking Stick (Aralia spinosa)

It grows here anywhere the timber is cleared. Trees grow to about twenty feet or so. Puts out a profusion of flowers the bees love. Only downside is it will take over and edge everything else out. I have to remove the new sprouts regularly.

Thanks for the reply, Michael. The disruption of the mite cycle interested me and I couldn't see any reason for breaking the edge of the cells.

OTS queen rearing?

Been reading up on Mel Disselkoen's OTS queen rearing as a method to disrupt the varroa mites life cycle while splitting off colonies.
Anyone have experience or opinion on this system.

new beekeeper in the arkansas ozarks

Hi everyone,

Started two warre hives last spring. One queen swarmed out late in the year so I ended up combining the remainder with the other hive. They are all clustered with ample stores (I hope) while I wait for spring. Hope I can learn a lot here, specifically about varroa and SHB.

I built all bevel bars, no wax. Results were beautiful straight comb with zero crosscomb. I only have 2 hives so maybe I'm lucky
