Nucleus Hive Construction Template

Postby Solomon » Fri May 29, 2015 2:57 pm

Here is the template to make simple and cheap nucleus hives from half inch plywood: Image

Here is what they look like when they are done: Image

If you construct them efficiently, you will get four from each sheet of plywood. Notice also, instead of using plywood, I used one by scraps for the end cleats on the lids. I didn't think plywood would hold up in a butt joint like that. After several years of usage, they have held up just fine.

I did have to scrap one nuc because squirrels chewed the heck out of it. It's now my smoker box.

I was going to post this same thing yesterday. But couldn't find a good drawing. You beat me to it.
Would also like to note these are Deeps.

Here's another!

Also, I fasten everything together with Tite Bond III and narrow crown staples. Plywood is not great with screws or nails in butt joints, plus, I'd hate to have to try to nail one of these things together, much less a dozen. GLUE!!!

Is the 7/8" space under the frames intentional?

I'm just fiddling with the plans in sketchup, and noticed a gap under the deep frames. I pulled the bottom up half an inch to keep 3/8" below the frames:

Pretty good, however, the gap at the top is more important. Some space at the bottom is okay. If you don't have enough beespace at the top, you get propolis, smashed bees, and something you don't like working with. Extra at the bottom is no big deal in my experience.

Yeah, I wasn't sure. I looked around at pictures online, and it looked like most hives keep 3/8 at the bottom, but I figured it wasn't a huge deal either way.

For mediums, just reduce three inches in height.

Very nice. I like to cut strips of the standard widths, then trim to the length dimension. Perhaps less waste, but you don't get and even number out of a sheet. I need to make some mediums. Perhaps a project for this summer.

Or maybe I could make spacers that fit in the bottom of a deep nuc, making it a medium. Would have to be something simple though, like polystyrene insulation.

I used that same plan to make my mediums and it worked great. I used scraps for the little pieces and was able to make 2 extra boxes to allow for easy expansion of my Nuc's and bigger area for swarm traps.

I'm in the process of making some medium nuc boxes. I've found some scrap 1 by 8 cedar to make them from and am gluing some 5/4 X 6 cedar together as well. Those are turning out to be nice boxes. The bottom box is a medium double nuc box that M. Palmer uses (regular hive body with a divider except mine are made out of 2 x 8 and are mediums), and I put medium nuc boxes on top. Since I have 1 1/4 inch frames I can run a 5 frame box with an inside width of 7 inches. I might put together a couple of boxes with an attached bottom, but this is not very flexible if all your boxes are like this. Mine overwintered well in a 5 over 5 configuration. I use biscuits with my butt jointed, glued and nailed boxes.

Bottom space can be anywhere from 1/4" to 7/8". I usually go for 3/4". Top space should be between 1/4" and 3/8". I prefer 3/8" for a nuc or a horizontal hive because as propolis build up on the frame rest it doesn't get crowded at the top. Of course if you do a top entrance with shims it gets a bit more and the typical 1/4" works better as the top adds more.

Five full mediums out of a sheet? I like that.
