Look into using quilt boxes over the winter. I use 2-3 inch shims with window screen stapled to the bottom. Line the inside with denim from old blue jeans and fill that with cedar chips. Put pennies or construction wedge/shims in the corners and the inner cover on top of that.
There are people who drill holes in the sides for ventilation. I don't because I use these shims for all sorts of things and don't want the holes in the sides.
Doesn't really matter how tall they are - My husband builds them with whatever scrap he has. Last winter was one short and used an empty medium, screened the bottom, lined with denim and put a couple inches of chips in, and vented it. Worked just like the others.
These made it possible for me to over-winter here. [Extremely variable winter weather and can get down to the -20s]
