Locations - find fellow TB beekeepers

Postby Honeycreek » Wed May 20, 2015 2:36 pm

Hello, My name is Frank and I'm a top bar beekeeper in Northwest Arkansas (Carroll County).

Is it hard to find someone to ask TB your questions? Sometimes it seems lonely to be different. Clubs sometimes make TB folks seem like a novelty. Perhaps there is someone in your area that could share their experiences.

My name is Chuck and I have 4 top bar hives (so far) in Rescue CA. My local bee club has a few other that use TBH.

I'm Justin, in Sacramento, CA. My hive is a long langstroth, which is really more like a TBH than a Lang, I think. At least in management style.

I am a first year beekeeper in the Pacific Northwest and have 2 TBHs and building a long Lang currently. Top bar beekeeping is gaining popularity here among backyard beeks.

Hello, I am Scott, and I currently run TBHs in North East WI. There are a few of us with them in this neck of the woods.

Hello, I am Valerie, My location is in Placerville, CA.
Elevation about 2000 ft, fairly mild winters, and intermittently hot summers.
I have:
1 TB, started April 2015 from a package.
2 Langs ( 1 pkg March 2014, split March 2015 and are a combination of foundation and foundationless frames)
1 Warre (package April 2015).
My favorite for observing and management is the top bar, and I want to convert the Langs to topbars, so any thoughts on this are appreciated.

Hello. My name is Roger and I'm a top bar tender near Kansas City.

I had 5 hives going into winter. 6 if you count the baby swarm, that was hived in late Oct.
We had a warm day over the weekend, I'm happy to report that ALL hives are alive and showed at least some activity. I still don't expect the Oct surprise to make it, they were tiny and cold. They are spending the winter hived in my basement.

I've got a friend moving from Langs to TBH's and I'm mentoring a Warre'or.
I gave a presentation on top bar hives at one of the Midwestern Beekeeper's Association meetings a few months ago. It was a lot more positive than I was expecting. There are a ton of new beekeepers out there that are excited about what we are doing, but most of the old time beekeepers tend to have less of an open mind. This is the only beekeepers association near me that has shown any acceptance of alternative hive styles. The rest are vehemently against both TBH and TF.

It's lonely being a top bar hive beekeeper. I'm just trying to do my part to help the movement grow locally.

I'm a newby top bar hive owner in Austin Texas. Not in it for the honey, just trying to give the bees a place to hang out! And that's what they're doing! What do you think? They are like this day and night. Some activity in and out but mostly hanging! Bearding they say.
