Pf-120 or Foundationless

You have just gotten your bees, either in the mail or you have gone and picked them up in person. Now what do you do? Covers from installation in your hive until the end of the first winter and the first blooms of spring.

Pf-120 or Foundationless

Postby Max » Thu Apr 14, 2016 2:18 am

I am getting my second NUC Saturday, with the package I started out with this will make three hives total all mediums. Hive 1 is a package 4 weeks in the hive on foundationless frames, they are kicking butt and I think I am going to put the second box on this weekend. Hive 2 is 5 deep frames from the NUC in two medium boxes with PF-120 frames on the outsides and the #4 spot upper and lower, they have been in 2weeks and have just started drawing out one corner of one side of one frame. For the next NUC would you use PF-120's or foundationless frames and why? How would you configure the new hive? Bunch them up in the middle or intersperse new frames?

The main advantage to the PF120s is getting some actual small cell comb in the hive so you can quickly get them regressed.

After you have smaller bees, then natural comb works great.

You know I had read that article several times, in fact it was the reason I ordered the PF-120's. Just goes to show that book learnin needs practical application.....at least in my case. Your brief statement made my brain make the connection.
